This article deals with negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT), the leading-edge technology of a moist environment in wound healing.

It describes the features of the therapy in a comprehensive manner: mode of action, clinical indications and contraindications as well as recommendations on duration of therapy.

In addition to the presentation of every step of the dressing application, there is a table describing the practical modalities of use of NPWT. Finally, a decision algorithm is used as a guide for the surgical management in the hospital setting. The part of this algorithm relating to non-surgical healing deserves further consideration to guide the practitioner when considering the use of NPWT.
