Demographics
0-14 years – 29%,
15 - 64 years – 66%
over 65 years – 5% (men 46.5% and women 53.5%)

Economics
Men account for 70.3% of paid economic activity. 13.5% of workers receive minimum wage.

Literacy
The illiteracy rate is around 10%.

Health Service
Health services are both pubic and private. Almost 60 million Mexicans are covered by government health programs.

Diabetes in Mexico

  • Between four and five million Mexicans are diabetic, with a prevalence in the general population of 8.3%.
  • Approximately 60% are aware they are sick, 29% ignore it, and only 1% get regular treatment.
  • By the age of 69, the prevalence of diabetes is 20%2.
  • One public health provider, the Mexican Institute of the Public Health (IMSS), which covers 46,533,924 Mexicans, alone reported 90,215 Type 2 cases and 1682 Type 1 cases to the end of 20023.
  • Complications from diabetes are the third leading cause of death in Mexico after cardiovascular illnesses and cancer.
  • 547 new cases of diabetes are reported every day.
  • It is expected that by the year 2025, 12 million diabetics will be living in Mexico.
  • 2% of diabetic patients develop diabetic foot ulcers every year, a leading cause of hospitalizations of diabetic patients in Mexico.
