CAWC Research Committee Report, February 3, 2003

Members: Melody Boyd R. Diebold, Ken Dolynchuk (minute taker), Gordon Dow, Aziz Ghahary, Margaret Harrison, Pamela Houghton (Chair), Ian Graham,Virginia McNaughton, Nancy Unsworth, Lore White.

The first of meeting of the research committee was held at the Annual conference during the Research Forum, Friday November 15th, 5-6pm.

Dr. Wayne Gulliver an overview of a collaborative project entitled "Canadian Longitudinal Study to Assess the Impact of Chronic Wounds on both Health Care Delivery and Health Care Cost in our Aging Population". This project proposed to use a web based educational program for primary care Physicians to assess the quality of diagnosis and treatment of chronic wounds in primary care practice in Canada.
Dr. Margaret Harrison provided pearls of wisdom for successful applications for funding by national granting agencies (CIHR & SSHRC).

A discussion followed with the members of the CAWC research committee and other attendees of the conference who joined the Research Forum. In this discussion the objectives of the committee were developed and roles and responsibilities of the committee reviewed. In addition, the research needs of the membership were captured. Two key needs were raised

1. To provide an educational session on skills needed to conduct research was requested
2. To have baseline data on the number and costs of chronic wounds across Canada

Out of this discussion a proposed direction for this committee was brought to the board of directors of the CAWC at meeting held January 24-25, 2003. At this meeting this direction was approved and received the full support of CAWC Board members.
