Chronic Wounds in Canada:
Facts and Stats
Information Request
The extent of the problem of
chronic wounds in Canada is being determined in a project, undertaken
by Drs. Pamela Houghton and Gail Woodbury. We are collating existing information
(published and unpublished studies) and are requesting your help if you
have any of the following information:
Prevalence [1] and/or incidence [2]
of patients with chronic wounds.
Financial costs of care (e.g., for hospitalization, nursing visits, supplies,
time off work, etc.).
Human consequences (e.g., amputation, pain, quality of life, etc.).
Provide as many of the following as possible:
- ulcer characteristics (e.g.,
type, location, stage, duration),
- subject demographics (e.g.,
age, sex, comorbid conditions especially diabetes),
- health care setting (e.g.,
acute care, chronic/rehabilitation, long-term care, nursing home, community
care, etc.),
- description of the process
used to obtain the data.
If you have or know of any
studies, please email, phone, fax or write.

[1] Prevalence: the proportion of a group that has a
wound (count patients not ulcers) at a given time; which may be a single
point in time or a time period during which the cases are counted. The
number of patients with wounds and the size of the group assessed could
be provided.
[2] Incidence: the proportion of a group initially free
of ulcers that develop them during a specified period of study (eg. 3-month
period). The number of patients with new wounds and the size of the group
assessed could be provided.
