S-Series: CAWC Three-part Educational Series

Session 3 - Reflective Learning & Practice Portfolio

Those who have completed either the S1 and S2 OR the International Interdisciplinary Wound Care Course (IIWCC) and the S2 are eligible to register for the Reflective Learning & Practice Portfolio (S3), which provides a framework that is designed to assist you to further identify the knowledge and/or skills required for optimal development of your wound-care practice.

The S3 assists you, through reflection on both what you know (learning inventory and critical pathway) and on what you don’t know (reflective learning and practice framework) by:

  1. Supporting the development of your career through a systematic, reflective process
  2. Clearly presenting a portfolio of your wound-care knowledge, skills and experience, including collation of proof documents such as certificates of attendance and completion, etc.
  3. Clearly identifying gaps in knowledge, skills and experience and supporting a process to fill the gaps
  4. Providing a self-directed critical pathway toward the ongoing development of your
    wound-care expertise

How Does the S3 Work?
The S3 is a Reflective Learning & Practice Portfolio that you complete yourself. It comes to you on CD and you require a computer with a CD player in order to properly complete it. It is designed to allow you to work at your pace, focusing on your own objectives, with the degree of commitment that suits you best. In the largest sense, it is a two-step process.

Step one is based on a workbook and supporting documents contained on a CD that you will receive upon registering for S3. The workbook is a guide to take you through a process of reflection and evaluation of your current career, leading to the creation of a plan for continued learning in areas that you identify as being important to you. The resulting planning document is referred to as your Reflective Learning & Practice Portfolio. You can take as long as you need to complete step one. You can choose to work on it on your own or with the assistance of your supervisor, a mentor, or other colleagues.

Once you have completed step one, the creation of your Reflective Learning & Practice Portfolio, you are encouraged to move on to step two, which is the submission of your Portfolio to the CAWC for evaluation by an expert in ongoing learning in the field of wound care. A second, nominal, payment will be required at this time.

Everyone who completes step one will realize significant benefits, just from having gone through the process of self-evaluation based on the materials contained in the workbook. And many participants will want to stop there. But we do encourage you to submit your portfolio for evaluation in order to gain further insight and improve your strategies for ongoing learning.
As well, only those who submit a portfolio will receive a Certificate of Completion for the S-Series program.

When you elect to participate in S3, you have already made a great choice. Either way you will benefit from the experience, whether you do only step one or both steps one and two.
