Monofilaments
5.07 monofilaments for sensation testing now available through the CAWC
Clinicians have had difficulty finding monofilaments and the CAWC is pleased to offer them to clinicians for cost only.
Peripheral neuropathy affects sensory motor and autonomic nerves. Loss of protective sensation (LOPS) is the most significant predictor of diabetic foot ulceration. Assessment of LOPS is easily accomplished, by the clinician or patient/family, by using a Semmes Weinstein 5.07 monofilament. The inability to perceive the 10 g of bending force applied by the monofilament is associated with clinically significant large fibre neuropathy. For further readings on the use of monofilaments refer to the soon to be released Best Practice Recommendations for the Prevention, diagnosis and Treatment of Diabetic Foot Ulcers: Update 2006 in Wound Care Canada, or the following:
- Armstrong DG, Lavery LA, Harkless LB. (1998). Validation of a diabetic wound classification system. The contribution of depth, infection, and ischemia to risk of amputation. Diabetes Care. 1998;21(5):855-9.
- Registered Nurses Association of Canada. RNAO Nursing Best Practice Guideline. Assessment and Management of Foot Ulcers for People with Diabetes. 2005.
Monofilaments come in two types: with instruction cards and without instruction cards (available in either English or French). The type with instruction cards are particularly useful for patients and lay caregivers.
